In 1965, three nonviolent protest marches were organized by MLK and the Civil Rights movement asking the right to vote for all African Americans and for the end of racial segregation, which was still present in some states in the South. The marches went along the 54 mile highway from Selma, crossing the Pettus bridge, to the state Capitol of Montgomery. The last march was a success, leading to the passage of the voting right Act of 1965.
