Archway Music / Dance / Literary Events, 2023
OCTOBER, 2023

Sunday, October 1, 6:00-8:00pm, AURA of UH
In the program Shifting Borders, AURA performs music that explores physical and psychological boundaries. The ever-changing motion of fire is sonically captured in Charles Peck’s colorful and energetic mixed chamber work “Kindling”, while in “Monarch” UH music scholar Sam Wu explores the epic migration of the North American Monarch butterfly via a quartet of flute, violin, cello, and piano. In “Velvet Revolution”, a trio for horn, violin, and piano by Elena Kats-Chernin, the composer contemplates the myriad of emotions she felt when living in Berlin in 1989 when the wall fell, which includes feelings of vulnerability, fear, and optimism. The program will conclude with David Biedenbender’s deeply compelling “Shell and Wing”, for soprano and mixed ensemble, which reflects on the conflict all parents face between the desire to protect their child and the acceptance that they will eventually have to send them off into the world on their own.

Sunday, October 8, 6:00-8:00pm, Robinhood Quartet
Comprising of violinists Angela Ryu and Hannah Corbett, violist Conor McAvinue and cellist Adam Willson, the Robinhood Quartet loves to indulge in the romantic harmonies of Brahms. The group formed at Rice University’s the Shepherd School of Music in late 2022 and has been dazzling audiences and concertgoers with their virtuosic playing ever since. Hailed as a quartet with “great conversational skills” by Arnold Steinhardt, the quartet enjoys sharing the music making process together, allowing each voice to shine. In addition to playing music together, the musicians love to spend time together sharing good food outside.

Saturday, October 14, 7:00-9:00pm, VIDEO | ART | MUSIC | TEXT with Mark Rodrieg
Join Mark Rodrieg for an evening of mixed-media art, discussion, and light reception. This program is centered on three of Mark’s latest video-art pieces - quasi-narrative works based on modern classical music scores (works by Bohuslav Martinu, Vincent Persichetti, and 4 of Mark’s own compositions), with recorded performances by the Rodrieg Ensemble. In this series, Mark explores the concept of imagining the non-present in artistic production, i.e. the relationship between and among abstract work, aesthetics, performance practice, and our imaginations.
Mark Rodrieg is a multi-dimensional artist (flutist, composer, video artist) whose works/ performances have been presented in concert venues and curated museums/art spaces and radio stations in North America, Europe, and Asia.
