Changing Weather - By Larry Garmezy
Changing Weather, Centennial Valley – In 1915 Alan and Jane Buck came to Centennial Valley via train to Monida, Mt. and then made a two day trip on a horse-drawn freight wagon to the east side of the Valley. They spent their first winter living in a tent, and then built a one-room cabin. In 1930 they filed for an additional homestead, and built the rough-hewn log home seen here. Alan built the house and its furnishings, with the exception of flooring hauled from an old dance hall 20 miles to the east. The property is now part of the Red Rock Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. A few winters ago, biologists from the refuge snowmobiled to the base of the hill to count moose. Their commotion startled a mountain lion that had taken up residence in the house, who charged out the door and bolted up the hill.
