I’ve been a printmaker for about 35 years, and my work has changed quite a bit since the early days, but I still enjoy looking at many of my early pieces. That’s my goal in making art, I want things that one enjoys looking at more than once and appreciates every time. There’s no psychological, spiritual, or political meaning in my pieces, they’re just there to be art, and hopefully bring a smile, or maybe a moment of solitude while looking deeply into the image. Hmmm, that might be spiritual.
Sometimes I’m in a situation where people want to discuss whether something is art or not. I think it’s simple, art is anything made by an artist, and an artist is anyone who makes art. I’ve been told that’s a circular argument, which I guess is bad, but it makes sense to me. Now about that art, I’m not saying it’s all good, but it is art.
Along with printmaking, I’m also a weaver. I do tapestry and cloth production. I’m also a docent at the main museum here in Houston, and I mostly take 3rd graders through the collection. When I tell people that’s something I do they often tell me about their field trip to a museum when they were young. I think of it then as a lifetime experience, something these kids will remember for a long time, and I take that responsibility seriously. I like to think of my tours as anything but boring, and all I want from these kids when they leave is to want to come back.
I like being involved in different aspects of the art world, and I’m happy to say that I am an artist and I do make art.
