About 1.2 million years ago, a spectacular volcanic eruption created a 14-mile-wide circular depression in the earth now known as Valles Caldera. Today the caldera is the centerpiece of the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Nestled in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico, the caldera is lushly green with spring vegetation that gives way to brown and yellow grasses during the hot summer months.
