Anne Walker - Fire in Japan

Archway member artist Anne Walker was recently in Japan with the Glassell School of Art. The two-week trip included tours of ancient kilns as well as firing in an anagama kiln at Doro Pottery in Himeji. Tom and Junko Dorsey opened their studio to ten students in order to create pieces for three days of making, then bisqueing the pieces and finally a three day wood firing. While pieces were being bisqued, the group was able to go to the Art Island, Naoshima and Teshima to view some amazing Japanese art. Also included was a trip to Tamba, a small town who has had generations of potters making and selling their wares. There were hikes in the woods around Tom and Junko’s studio where old and hidden shrines were found, as well has a hike up Himeji’s mountain to see the shrine where The Last Samurai was filmed. Some of Anne’s work will be featured at a show at the Glassell starting December 15 and running through February 15th.
