Archway Gallery Celebrates Half a Century of Artist-Led Creativity
|
Archway Gallery, Texas’ longest-running artist-owned and operated gallery, proudly marks its 50th anniversary with a landmark exhibition titled Fifty Forward, opening April 11, 2026. This milestone year celebrates half a century of artistic innovation, community connection, and unwavering commitment to elevating Houston’s creative spirit. |
For fifty years, the artists at Archway Gallery have shaped their own creative path, establishing the gallery as a cornerstone of Houston’s vibrant arts community. Founded in 1976 by twelve local artists determined to market and sell their own work, the gallery first opened its doors in the The Jung Center, drawing its name from the distinctive arches in that space. Over time and several locations later, Archway Gallery has evolved into a cherished arts district institution—an enduring symbol of artistic collaboration and community spirit. While many galleries have come and gone, the success of Archway Gallery is rooted in a shared passion and purpose—a truth affirmed by the over 200 artists who have been a part of Archway’s story.
One of its founding members, Stephanie Nadolkski, recounts the impact the gallery had on her career. “I cannot count the many ways Archway contributed to my artistic and professional career. All the artists were there for support and inspiration and loyal collectors became friends, adding layers of dimension to my personal and professional growth.” Longtime patron of Archway Gallery Marcia Faschingbauer describes her first memory. “I first discovered Archway Gallery at The Jung Center, and it has continued to weave itself through my life ever since—through artists, friendships, and unforgettable works my husband and I have collected and lived with for decades. It is a deeply welcoming, inclusive place where you truly get to know the people behind art, reflecting the cultural diversity and creative spirit that defines Houston itself. Having survived storms, a pandemic, and decades of change, Archway Gallery continues to evolve without ever becoming stale even though it has tremendous history and legacy. Congratulations to artists past and present whose big hearts continue to connect and inspire us,” said Faschingbauer.

Fifty Forward: A Portrait of the Past, Present & Future
The anniversary exhibition, Fifty Forward, pays tribute to the artists who are continuing to build Archway Gallery’s legacy. A striking wall of self-portraits, featuring each of the current artists, honors the people whose creative energy and shared vision are carrying the gallery into the next half century. The front gallery will also feature works from all the current gallery members. Guests are invited to share thoughts and wishes for the future of Archway Gallery. As part of the anniversary celebration one guest submission will be selected to receive a $500 gift certificate. The exhibition opens with a public reception on Saturday, April 11, inviting Houstonians to celebrate the artists, their work, and the community that has supported Archway for 50 years. Guests can meet the artists and reflect on the gallery’s extraordinary journey. A champagne toast, and remarks will take place at 6:30 p.m. A Legacy Rooted in Community
Archway remains known not only for its diverse art but also for its welcoming atmosphere. There is always an artist on-site, offering visitors access to the inventive mind and making art feel approachable, personal, and deeply connected to the community. This open-door model has become a defining characteristic of Archway’s identity. Local art is essential to a city’s cultural voice, a truth echoed by longtime member and current Treasurer John Slaby who said, “If I walk into a gallery and the work features art from another city, it will be informed by the experience of that city. If there is no local art, then there is no voice for us. It would be as if we never existed. In the distant future, if people can experience our art, then they will have a sense of what it was like to have lived here. We leave a legacy. And the deeper the art, the deeper is that legacy.” |
A Cooperative Model That Endures
Creativity never retires, and at Archway Gallery, neither do its artists. Each member artist contributes to the daily operations—allowing the gallery to thrive as a seamless, self-sustaining organization. Monthly exhibitions rotate every 30 days, offering fresh perspectives year-round. Archway is also known for charitable partnerships like Empty Bowls Houston and for its Annual Juried Exhibition for local non-member artists, reinforcing the gallery’s commitment to giving back. Current Gallery Director Harold Joiner reflects on the gallery’s milestone moment:
“Archway Gallery’s evolution over 50 years is utterly amazing. To know that the original small group of artists has now expanded into more than 30 creatively eclectic minds—still succeeding in a rapidly changing world—is astounding. Archway artists are like a family who share their warmth and friendliness with all who visit. Being part of the Archway family has been rewarding beyond measure.”
