I steal lines and choreograph them into abstractions.
Many of my lines are drawn from dancers dancing. These works become abstractions, not of the dancers, but of the dance. Dance is primal, primitive and beyond reason, a ritualized form of expressing desire and animal need. The painting process is for me a passionate, wordless dance with the tactile sensuality of graphite and paint.
After 7 years of painting in blacks, whites and grays, I've submerged myself in color, hot color. My latest series is titled Caliente. I'm reveling in the sensuousness of intense color. I'm also enjoying the intensity that comes of layers and layers of oil paint. My recent color paintings are of decadent, splendid colors, with no discernible subject matter, rioting in a shallow, confused space. I see them as a celebration of life.
The structural lines of the Caliente series were drawn at rehearsals of Lydia Hance’s Frame Dance Productions (www.framedance.org). For my 2009 show Entanglements at Archway Gallery, I collaborated with choreographer/dancer jhon r stronks (www.thereinthesunlight.com).
